300x300 mm, the 1x1 foot square, is the smallest common floor tile and the one to use where water has to be led somewhere. Each tile covers about 0.97 square feet, and ten to a box gives roughly 9.7 square feet.

Built for Wet Floors
A bathroom floor has to fall towards the drain from every direction. Small tiles are what make that possible, because each one sits at a slightly different angle and the grout lines absorb the change. Try it in a large format and the floor either holds water or the tiles lip.
The dense grid of joints also gives grip underfoot, which is the reason this size persists in wet areas long after large format took over the rest of the house.

Quantities
Add fifteen per cent rather than ten for a bathroom floor: the drain, the closet outlet and the pipe chase all waste material. Divide by about 9.7 square feet per box.
