How the Arithmetic Works

Three steps, and the second is the one people skip.

Area. Length multiplied by width. A room 12 feet by 10 feet is 120 square feet. Measure in feet or in metres, but do not mix the two halfway through.

Wastage. Nobody uses everything they buy. Tiles are cut at the edges, around pipes and door frames, and a few break in handling. Ten per cent for a simple straight layout, fifteen for anything diagonal, large format, or full of cutouts.

Boxes. A box holds a fixed number of pieces, not a fixed area, so the coverage depends on the tile. Divide the area you are buying by the area one box covers, and round up. Our guide to how many tiles you need goes through a worked example end to end.

What the Calculator Does Not Cover

Skirting is measured in running feet around the room rather than in square feet, so it is counted separately. Adhesive, grout and spacers are quoted on the area once the tile is chosen. And if a room has an alcove, a step or a sloped ceiling, bring the dimensions in and we will work through it with you rather than guessing at a rectangle.

Questions

How many tiles do I need for a room?

Multiply the length by the width to get the area, add ten per cent for cuts on a straight layout or fifteen per cent for a diagonal or a room with many cutouts, then divide by the area one tile covers. The calculator above does all three steps.

How do I convert square feet into boxes?

Divide the area you are buying by the area one box covers, then round up. A box holds a fixed number of pieces, not a fixed area, so the coverage changes with the tile size: 600x1200 mm at 2 per box covers about 15.5 square feet, while 300x600 mm at 5 per box covers about 9.7.

How much wastage should I allow?

Ten per cent for a simple rectangular room laid straight. Fifteen per cent for a diagonal or herringbone layout, a large format tile, or a bathroom full of pipe cutouts. Then one spare box on top, kept from the same batch.

Why do I need a spare box?

Tiles are made in batches and the same design bought a year later can differ slightly in shade. A spare from the original batch turns a cracked tile into an invisible repair rather than a patch that catches the eye.

Does the calculator include skirting?

No. Skirting is measured in running feet around the room rather than in square feet, and it is usually cut from full tiles or bought as a matching strip. Tell us the room perimeter and we will work it out separately.
