By size
The face of the tile, in millimetres. Size decides how many grout lines a floor has, how flat the base under it must be, and how much waste a layout produces.
By finish
Matt scatters light and grips underfoot; glossy reflects it and wipes clean. The rule that covers most homes is matt on floors, glossy on walls.
By material
Vitrified is dense and low absorption, which is why it belongs on floors and outdoors. Ceramic is lighter and easier to cut, which is why it belongs on walls.
Which One to Start From
Most people start from size, because it is usually fixed by the room before anything else is decided: a 2x4 foot tile in a small bathroom spends its life being cut, and a 1x1 foot tile on a large hall floor fills it with grout lines. Once the size is settled, finish is the choice that matters day to day, and material is largely decided by whether the tile is going on a floor or a wall.
