The R-rating system (also called the ramp test) measures how steep an oiled ramp can get before a person wearing standard shoes starts to slip on the tile. The higher the R number, the more grip the tile provides.

R10 is the minimum for the dry zone (around the WC and vanity). R11 is recommended for the wet zone (shower area, near the bucket-and-mug bathing spot). If you can only choose one rating for the entire bathroom floor, go with R11. It covers both zones safely.
Ask the showroom staff for the R-rating. If it is not printed on the box or spec sheet, do the wet-hand test (covered below). Any quality anti skid tiles for the bathroom will have a documented rating.
Spec sheets are useful but your hands and feet give faster answers. Here are three tests you can do at any tile showroom in two minutes.
Wet your palm with water, press it flat against the tile surface, and try to slide it. A good anti-skid tile will resist the slide noticeably. A slippery tile will let your hand glide. This is the simplest test and it works reliably for comparing two tiles side by side.
Run a wet finger across the surface. An anti-skid tile feels like it is gently gripping your finger. A polished tile feels like glass. If you cannot feel any resistance, that tile is not safe for a wet bathroom floor.
Hold the tile at an angle and pour a small amount of water on it. Watch how the water moves. On an anti-skid tile, the water clings to the surface and moves slowly. On a polished tile, it sheets off immediately. The slower the water moves, the more grip the surface has.
"What is the R-rating of this tile?" and "Is this rated for wet areas?" If they cannot answer, ask for a different brand or visit a showroom that stocks rated products. Not every room needs the same level of grip. Over-specifying wastes money (R12 tiles cost more and have more texture than you need indoors). Under-specifying risks safety.
R11 minimum. This is where falls happen most. The floor is wet after every use, often with soap residue. Use a matte or textured vitrified tile with documented R11 rating.
R10 is sufficient. This area gets damp but rarely has standing water. You can use a smoother finish here and create a subtle visual boundary between the wet and dry zones.

R11. Rain blowback and morning dew make these surfaces wet regularly. Matte anti-skid tiles are essential.
R12. Full weather exposure, vehicle traffic, and standing water demand maximum grip.
R9 is fine. These rooms stay dry, and you want the design freedom that smoother finishes offer. No need for anti-skid here.

"Are anti slip tiles hard to clean?" is one of the most common questions homeowners ask, and the honest answer is: slightly harder than polished tiles, but not difficult if you use the right method.
The textured surface that provides grip also traps a thin layer of dirt, soap residue, and grime more than a smooth surface does. This does not mean anti-skid tiles are impractical. It means your cleaning routine needs one small adjustment.
Mop with warm water and a pH-neutral floor cleaner. Avoid oil-based cleaners or wax-based polishes, as they coat the texture and reduce the grip over time. A microfibre mop works better than a cotton one because it gets into the surface texture.
Scrub with a stiff nylon brush (not a metal one) and a slightly stronger floor cleaner to remove built-up soap residue. Pay extra attention to the shower zone where soap accumulates most.
What to avoid: Never use wax, polish, or silicone-based floor treatments on anti-skid tiles. These fill the surface texture and turn an anti-skid tile into a slippery one. If someone has already applied a polish, strip it with a degreaser before it becomes a safety hazard.
The grip check: Once a month, do the wet-hand test on your bathroom floor tile. If it feels less grippy than when it was new, a deep clean with a degreaser will usually restore the texture. If it still feels smooth after cleaning, the tile's surface may have worn down and it is time to consult a professional or consider replacement.
