The main door handle is the one piece of hardware every guest touches, and usually the last thing anyone thinks about. The lock is chosen by the carpenter and the handle gets picked from a photo on the day of fixing. That is how a flat ends up with a fine teak door and a handle that is too short, the wrong metal, or fighting the lock beside it.
Good main door handle design comes down to four decisions: which lock the handle has to work with, how long it should be, what it is made of, and how the finish is applied. Colour comes last. This guide works through those decisions using our handles range of 195 products, 24 of which are tagged as main door handles.
Two things to be upfront about. We do not publish prices for handles, so every design in this range is quoted on request, and you will not find a figure in this article. Call before you visit and we will tell you which designs you can hold in your hand.
There are two kinds of main door handle, and they do different jobs.
Most of the main door handles in our range are pull handles, listed by length. If you want a lever on a plate, that comes with the lock, so start in our locks range instead. Our guide to door lock types covers which lock suits which door.
The common Bengaluru pairing now is a digital lock with a separate long pull handle. If that is your plan, choose the lock first and check where its body and keypad sit on the door. The pull handle goes in the free space beside it.
| Handle type | Designs | Where it goes |
| Knobs | 67 | Drawers, small shutters, dressers |
| Cabinet handles | 43 | Kitchen and wardrobe shutters |
| Concealed handles | 31 | Flush shutters where you want no visible bar |
| Main door handles | 24 | Main doors and heavy entrance doors |
| Profile handles | 22 | Run along the top or side edge of a shutter |
| Chest handles | 8 | Chests, trunks and box furniture |
Across the 195, the brands are Otro (54), Flybird (47), Tunes (39), Poins (27) and Decosta (25), with 3 listed under Sonet. The main door handles are narrower: 16 are from Poins, 7 from Tunes and one listed under Sonet.
The main door handles we carry come in these lengths:
| Model | Lengths listed | Material listed |
| Poins UpGrade 4404 | 300, 450, 600, 900 mm | Not listed |
| Poins UpGrade 4403 | 300, 450, 600, 900 mm | SS 304 |
| Poins UpGrade 4402 | 300, 450, 600 mm | Not listed |
| Poins UpGrade 4401 | 300 mm | SS 304 |
| Poins door pull handle 1005 | 200, 300, 450, 600 mm | Not listed |
| Poins CPY 2024 to 2027 | 300, 450 mm | Not listed |
| Tunes TU-DH-10401 | 300, 450 mm | Not listed |
| Tunes TU-DH-90351 | 300, 450 mm | Brass |
The Poins CPY Mayura is 260 mm. On Tunes listings the size reads like 300 x 324: the first figure is the distance between fixing points, the second the overall bar length. Compare like with like.
Our recommendations by door:
Check how the handle fixes before you order. Some pull handles are bolted through the door with a matching handle on the inside, others are single-sided and screwed on. Through-bolted fixings must suit your door's thickness, so measure it.
Of the 80 handles in our range with a material listed, 73 are zinc alloy in some form, including 6 listed as zinc alloy electroplated. The rest are aluminium (4), SS 304 (2) and brass (1). Zinc alloy, often sold as Zamak, is cast into detailed shapes easily, which is why most decorative handles use it. The finish you see is a coating on top.
Both SS 304 handles in the range are main door handles (Poins UpGrade 4401 and 4403), and so is the one brass handle (Tunes TU-DH-90351).
Searching our 195 handle listings for finish words gives these counts. One handle can match several words, since many come in more than one finish, so read them as a guide to what is common rather than a total:
| Finish keyword | Listings |
| Black | 122 |
| Gold | 75 |
| Brass | 67 |
| Grey | 50 |
| Antique | 37 |
| Copper | 31 |
| Rose | 26 |
| Satin | 18 |
| Chrome | 11 |
Black dominates and chrome is rare, so a chrome scheme throughout the house will have few handle options.
The question that decides how long a finish lasts is whether it is PVD or plated. PVD bonds a very hard, thin layer onto the metal and holds up far better to daily gripping. Electroplating looks just as good on day one but wears sooner where the hand rests. Among our main door handles, the Tunes TU-DH-90351 comes in PVD gold, PVD rose gold and PVD black, the TU-DH-90627 in PVD gold and PVD rose gold, and the Poins UpGrade 4404 pairs black with PVD gold, PVD rose gold or PVD black. The Poins Casablanca, Chicago, Canada, Colambia, Congo and Churu handles are zinc alloy electroplated, in two-tone finishes such as rose and gold, black and gold, antique copper and antique brass.
Our advice: if you want gold or rose gold on a main door, pay for PVD. A plated gold on a handle used forty times a day will show the grip area first. Plated antique finishes are more forgiving, since a little wear reads as age.
One apartment-specific check: some associations want main doors on a floor to look similar. Ask before fitting a 900 mm gold bar.
For the inside of the house, profile handles and knobs carry the same finish into the furniture. The wardrobe fittings guide and modular kitchen hardware guide cover what goes behind those shutters.
Call our BTM Layout showroom with your door finish and lock model, and we will shortlist main door handles from the range and tell you which can be seen in person. Bring a photo of the door or a laminate offcut, because a handle that looks right on screen often looks different against the real thing.
For a standard apartment main door, 300 mm is the safe choice. It sits at a comfortable height and leaves room for a digital or mortise lock beside it. Go to 450 mm on a heavy teak or wider door, 600 mm when the handle is meant to be a design feature, and keep 900 mm for tall villa doors.
For a door under a covered apartment corridor, a well-finished zinc alloy handle is adequate. For a door exposed to sun and monsoon rain, choose SS 304 or brass, because solid metal has no coating to wear through. In our range, the SS 304 and brass handles are all main door handles.
Yes, especially for gold, rose gold and black. PVD bonds a very hard layer onto the metal and resists the wear of daily gripping far better than ordinary plating. A plated gold handle on a busy main door tends to show wear where the hand rests first.
Yes, and it is one of the most common main door setups. The digital lock does the locking and the pull handle gives you something to pull the door with. Choose the lock first, mark where its body and keypad sit, then pick a handle length that fits the free space beside it.
Warm metals suit teak best: antique brass, gold, or black and gold two-tone finishes. Matt black also works as a contrast on lighter teak. Avoid chrome or cool grey on a dark wood door, as the metal looks disconnected from the wood.
We do not publish prices for our handles range, so main door handles are quoted on request. The price depends on the brand, the length, the material and whether the finish is PVD. Call the showroom with the model name or a photo of the design and we will give you a quote.
They should share the same metal and undertone, since they sit side by side on the door. If they differ slightly, a black lock beside a black and gold handle usually reads as deliberate, while gold beside chrome looks like a mistake.
Reading about it only gets you so far. Everything here is on the floor at our BTM Layout showroom, so you can put two options side by side, in daylight, before committing. Tell us what you are choosing between and we will have them ready before you arrive.
