One Wall, Not Four

Every room here that works tiles one wall and paints the rest. A tiled living room on all sides reads as a lobby rather than a home, and it is far harder to change later.

Behind the Television

The most common use, and the trickiest. A busy tile behind a screen fights it whenever the television is on. The rooms here that succeed use texture rather than pattern: stone, wood or a fluted finish that reads at a glance and then recedes.

Light Across a Textured Wall

A textured wall looks completely different lit from above than lit from the side. Look at where the light is coming from in each photograph, then think about where yours comes from.
