Matt Underfoot

Cooking oil travels further than people expect, and oil plus water on a glossy floor is a genuine slip risk in the one room where you carry hot pans. The kitchens here that are matt underfoot are matt for that reason.

Floor and Backsplash Together

Look at how the floor and the wall behave as a pair. The kitchens that read well usually keep one of the two quiet: a patterned floor with a plain backsplash, or a plain floor with a feature wall behind the hob.

A kitchen floor is largely hidden by units, so the tile you see is the walkway. Plan the setting out so the full tiles land in that strip rather than the cuts.
