How to Buy Tiles in Bangalore: Showroom vs Online

Buying tiles in Bangalore usually starts online and ends in a showroom. People shortlist on a phone, then come in to see the tile in person, and about half of them change their mind within ten minutes of picking one up. That is not indecision. A tile photographed under studio lighting and the same tile under your own tube light are two different products.

Showroom or Online: What Each One Is Good For

A tile is a manufactured product with measurable properties, and most of those properties are invisible in a photograph. Use the website to narrow 400 tiles down to eight. Use the showroom to pick one of the eight. Trying to do the whole job in either place alone wastes time.

What a Photograph Cannot Show You

• Undertone. Two grey tiles that look identical on a screen can be a warm grey and a cool grey. Against your wall paint, one will work and the other will fight it.
• Surface grip. A matte photo and an anti-skid photo look the same. Slip resistance is something your hand tells you in a second, which is the point of the test we describe in our anti-skid bathroom tiles guide.
• Shade variation. Natural-look tiles are printed in a set number of faces. A listing shows one face. On the floor you will see all of them, which is either the charm of the tile or a surprise.
• Scale. A veining pattern that looks fine in a 400 pixel image can be enormous across a 600x1200 slab.
• Edge quality. Whether a tile is rectified, and how true the edge is, decides how thin your grout line can be.

Before You Leave Home

1. Measure. Room by room, in feet. Note ceiling height for bathrooms and the door positions.
2. Carry the floor plan. A phone photograph of the architect's plan is enough.
3. Bring your fixed colours. A kitchen shutter sample, a paint swatch, the laminate chip, a photo of the sofa. Tiles get chosen against things that are already decided.
4. Know your rooms in order. Living, kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, balcony, parking. Selection is faster when the order is set.
5. Know your budget per square foot. A range is enough. It removes half the floor from consideration immediately.

Questions Worth Asking in Any Showroom

• Is this tile in stock in the full quantity I need, in one batch?
• Is it rectified, and what grout joint do you recommend?
• What is the water absorption, and is this suitable for a wet area or outdoor use?
• How many faces does the print have?
• What is the thickness, and is it rated for the load in that room?
• If I need two extra boxes in six months, will this model still be available?
• Does the rate include delivery to my address and offloading?

The stock question matters most. Tiles are made in batches and shade drifts between them. Ordering the whole quantity together, including the skirting allowance covered in our skirting tiles guide, avoids a repair patch that never quite matches.

Getting the Quantity Right

Buy the wastage. The most common regret in tile buying is ordering exactly the area, then finding that three tiles cracked during laying and the batch has sold out.

Judging Quality Without a Lab

You cannot test water absorption on a showroom counter, but you can do three useful checks in about a minute.

1. Stack two tiles face to face. They should sit flat against each other with no rocking. A warped tile will show lippage on the floor.
2. Look at the back. The stamp shows the manufacturer and usually the size and batch. An unbranded back is a reason to ask more questions.
3. Run a finger over the edge. A rectified tile has a crisp, consistent edge. An uneven edge means a wider grout joint.

Buying for Bangalore Conditions

• Red dust. From December to March it settles on everything. Dark high-gloss floors show it within hours of mopping. Matte and mid-tone floors are far more forgiving.
• Open plan flats. Living, dining and kitchen often read as one surface, so a shade mismatch between batches is visible across the whole space.
• Balcony sun and monsoon. Balconies take hard sun then heavy rain. Anti-skid rated tiles belong there, not gloss.
• Borewell water. Hard water leaves marks on dark polished surfaces faster than on matte.
