Judge the Run, Not the Tile

A backsplash is a band roughly 500 to 600 mm high between the counter and the wall units. That proportion is what makes a tile work or not: a large format covers it in two or three pieces with almost no grout, while a subway brick fills it with pattern. Both are in here.

Where the Cuts Land

Sockets, switch plates and the chimney bracket all interrupt a backsplash. In the photographs that look calm, the full tiles land in the middle of the run and the cuts are pushed to the ends, behind the tall unit or under the wall cupboard.

Gloss Behind the Hob

Cooking oil lifts off a glossy glaze with one wipe and sits in the texture of a matt tile. That is why so many of these kitchens are glossy above the counter even when the floor is matt.
